Your first step

Let’s talk about what comes next.

We normally respond to enquiries within 24 hours, and within two days at the latest. If a deadline is close, seek prompt assistance rather than waiting for our reply.

Your first consultation is a free 10-minute video call, using Zoom or a similar service. We will listen to the outline of your situation, discuss whether our service may be suitable and explain any proposed next steps.

Further work is charged by the hour. We will discuss the work you need, the rate and any anticipated expenses before you decide whether to engage us. We can discuss a staged approach so you know what you are committing to.

For signed clients, we guarantee a response within half a day. Our employment service is for employees. Our residential tenancy service is for renters; if you live in rooming accommodation, with a tenant or with the owner, tell us about your arrangement so we can consider whether our service is suitable.

Common questions

A little more clarity.

Do I need to know which law or commission applies?

No. Tell us what you know about your employer, workplace or living arrangement. Our questions help us screen the likely process, although the answers do not determine jurisdiction.

What happens after I make an enquiry?

We normally respond within 24 hours, and within two days at the latest. If your enquiry is suitable, we can arrange a free 10-minute video consultation. An enquiry does not lodge a claim or stop a deadline.

What should I bring to the first conversation?

A short outline of the issue, relevant dates and any upcoming deadlines is a good start. You do not need to send documents or detailed evidence with the initial enquiry.

How quickly will you respond?

We normally respond to new enquiries within 24 hours, and within two days at the latest. For signed clients, we guarantee a response within half a day. If a deadline is close, seek prompt assistance rather than waiting for our reply.

What does the consultation cost?

The first video consultation is free and lasts up to 10 minutes. Further work is charged hourly. We explain the rate and scope before you agree to proceed.

Can VLA speak for me?

It depends on the matter and the rules of the relevant body. Non-lawyer representation may be available where authorised and any required permission is obtained. We will explain the scope before you engage us.

What if I live with the owner or another tenant?

Tell us about your living arrangement. Different arrangements can involve different rules and we will consider whether our service is suitable or a referral would be more helpful.

Parker Van Lawrence

Advocate

I’m Parker Van Lawrence. I work with people facing difficult workplace situations, helping them put the facts in order and prepare for the next step.

VLA Queensland is an independent advocacy and practical support service for employees and residential tenants.

We work with people to organise their information and prepare for the processes relevant to their situation. The support available depends on the matter and the applicable rules. We explain our role and scope before accepting an engagement.

We are not a law firm and our team are not Australian legal practitioners. If legal representation or court appearances are required, we will suggest an appropriate referral.
